What are Knock Down (KD) Fittings & Knock Down Furniture

Knock-down fittings are those used in modular furniture in modern homes these days. Knock-down fittings are those that help put the furniture or a product together quickly and easily without using clamps and any glue. The product can be put together by simply using a screwdriver, a drill, a hammer and similar basic tools. These joints are just temporary joints that can be dismantled and assembled whenever necessary. Some are used to permanent joints for products like cabinets, etc. that come in a flat pack.

Advantages of knock-down Fittings

• Knock-Down fittings offer simple construction techniques for hard and difficult materials like MDF, particle board, etc.
• Knock-Down fittings allow huge and heavy products like wardrobes, kitchen units, etc. to sold and transported as flat packs and be assembled at home.

Old fashioned knock-down fittings usually left a big hole behind after dismantling it. This made it difficult to join the furniture easily again. This reduced the life of knock down furniture. To overcome this, there are a few manufacturers who have introduced a much modern knock-down fitting hardware.
The modern knock down fitting hardware has a nylon bushing. The screwing and drilling is done in this nylon bushing that doesn’t increase the furniture or any product joint-hole like before.

Types of Knock-Down fittings

Different types of Knock-down fittings are used for different purpose and different products.

Plastic Corner Block (Fixit Blocks): The corner block is pressed against the two pieces of material (normally wood based). Screws are used to fix the block into position. This type of joint is used to fit modern cabinets such as those found in a kitchen. It is a relatively strong joint although it has the advantage that it can be dismantled using a screwdriver.

>Natural wood Fitting (Square section cleat): A piece of material such as pine can be drilled and screws can be passed through these holes. This gives a cheap and effective knock-down joint. The screws are normally countersunk into the knock-down fitting.

Two block fitting (Lok-joints): These are made from plastic. A bolt passes through the first fitting into the thread of the second. As the bolt is tightened it draws the two fittings together. The pins help keep the fitting straight. This gives a very strong joint and it can be dismantled using a screwdriver.

Rigid Joint: These are normally molded in plastic which makes them strong. Screws pass through the four holes which hold the sides at each corner firmly together.
