I received a call from Delhi few days back asking me for a wooden wardrobe estimate. This is what we had to say. Before giving an estimate, a contractor needs to study the area i.e.  – is the wall straight or not?  Are the floor and ceiling aligned? Are there any slopes to be take care of? columns skirting, lights and switches, etc. also have to be well thought of.

To design a Wardrobe this is what a contractor needs to know-

Size – Very imp, the size of the wardrobe shall be known. Without size, material requirements and other details cannot be known. Therefore the estimate majorly depends on the size of wardrobe. Typically wardrobes are made in standard sizes, 4’x 7’ (wXh) or 7’x7’ (wXh).

Laminate – Wardrobes are laminated from all sides. But the budget for making a wardrobe also majorly depends on how expensive laminate you choose for your wardrobe.

Ply – There are 3 types of plywood available in market, commercial ply, industrial ply and marine plywood or veneer wood.  Also the thickness of the ply to be used for the wardrobe, back wall, doors, drawers and shelves and how many, shall be discussed.

Doors – Deciding on doors can be a little difficult. A client wants sliding doors or open-able door style. This is because, for sliding doors the floor and ceiling need to be in correct alignment, and for hinged (open-able) doors, there is no such matter.

Rough estimate – The approximate cost for
– open-able wardrobe door
– medium price ranged laminates,
– 8mm to10mm ply for back wall,
– 14mm to 18 mm ply for side wall,
– 18 mm ply for doors, is Rs. 1,300 per sq. ft.

For a 7’x7’ wardrobe with 3 drawers and 4 shelf’s, the cost will be 70,000/- to 75,000/- approximately. But let me remind you that this is a rough estimate which will differ as per your choice of material and style and size of the wardrobe.
Be it Mumbai, Pune or Delhi the estimate for making a wardrobe is more or less the same across India.
