Q – I am from Bangalore, and I am wanting to change my current kitchen sink that is made up granite. What material and brand shall I look for my kitchen sink?

A – In Bangalore, there are many branded kitchen sinks and other accessories. Companies like Nirali, Aupam, hindware, etc. are manufactures kitchen sinks and washbasins made of Stainless steel. There are other local Stainless steel sinks also available in market but are quite low in quality and price. So its advisable to go for good company/brand sinks.

Q – What is the price of these branded and local sinks mentioned above?

A – In this modern day world, you can find out prices sitting at home on the company websites.  The online cost and cost that a dealer/retailer provides is invariably same.  But if you have a known dealer/retailer, he may give you 3%-5% discount on the MRP of the product. The cost of good company sinks is same nation-wide, but the local sinks cost varies as per the city.  This is because different cities will have different transportation charges and taxes applied.

After summing up all the cost the local sinks price range starts from Rs 600/- and above whereas the branded sinks price is Rs 4000/- and above. The price difference is because of the quality and thickness of steel differs considerably.

The local sink steel thickness will be around 20 gauge (i.e 0.81 mm) and say Nirali company sinks will of 18 gauge (i.e. 1.02mm ) thick. These Stainless steel sifnks are manufactured from a single sheet of steel which undergoes a compressor and desired shape and style is given. If a crack is seen after passing this stage, usually companies will reject the product, but local manufacturers will try to hide this by welding it or giving it some kind of a finish. Therefore is always better to opt for good company sinks as they last for good 12-15 years or more.

Q – Why only Stainless steel sinks and not other material sinks?

A – Stainless steel sinks are easy to clean, more durable, resists corrosion, has hygiene and aseptic (health safety) properties and above all, it’s cost effective compared to sinks made of stone/ granite / marble. Stainless steel sinks are not damaged by hot or cold objects and resist damage from impacts.

One disadvantage of stainless steel is that, being made of thin metal, they tend to be noisier  than most other sink materials, although better sinks apply a heavy coating of vibration-damping material to the underside of the sink.
